Our history

Strut opened in Oshawa 23 years ago. The original owner had a chain of stores in the Durham Region and Toronto. Today she has retained one in Toronto while selling off the rest to independent owners. Many of the names have changed but I decided to keep the name as it has been a good store in the Oshawa downtown for many years and many women are familiar with the name. Pennie Murray (the original owner) came up with the name Strut from a well known pop song in the 80's by Sheena Easton.  The title of the song was Strut and while driving her car one day, thinking of a name for her first new store, the song came on the radio and so Strut was named. I have kept the name for this reason and also because I think it is a strong name and exudes attitude. It defines women and fashion. When I transformed the store over the last few months (giving it new colours on the exterior) I added Nouveau to the name. It lets people know that it is the same store with an update. The feedback has been very positive. Although I carry many of the original lines known to Strut, I have introduced many new ones. Several of the lines are higher end with some from Europe. The boutique (as I like to refer to it) has a European feel with some customers saying it reminds them of boutiques in Montreal and Quebec.

I was raised in Oshawa from the age of 2. I was born in Scotland and came to Canada with my parents in 1969. Apart from spending 4 years in Scotland from the age of 16-20  I have lived my life in Oshawa. I have a background in nursing and I worked for the Durham Regional Transit System for 16 years. When I discovered that Strut was closing this past January, I saw it as an opportunity to make a change. I have never owned my own business but it was something I felt that I had a passion for. By March 1/08 it was a reality and Strut reopened a month later under new ownership. The journey thus far has been very busy and rewarding. I am enjoying it very much and it is nice to be a part of the downtown revitalization of the city I grew up in. I now have a home in the community where I am raising my two daughters. My hope is to expand the business depending on the needs of the community and  and assist in transforming Oshawa into the fabulous town I know it can be.
